Staying off mailing lists is a bit trickier. Rest assured every time you give your name and address out there’s a likely hood that the organization collecting your contact information will use it as a communication channel to keep in touch with you. That includes the warranty cards, free offers, prize drawings and often times donations. So, as the temptation arises to sign up for “free” stuff, keep in mind it might not be that free after all. Your name is worth 3 to 20 cents every time it’s sold. Whenever you do need to provide your name and address be sure to include in legible writing, “Do not rent, trade, sell or give away my name, address, or phone number.” Although there is no need to hide from the mailing world, having a better understanding for how your name gets on lists can become an asset as you take steps to eliminating the resource draining junk mail from your household.

Keep in mind, you should allow at least three months after sending your letters before you can expect to see the reduction from your first step towards a life free of junk mail.

Because junk mail is affected by choices we make in our everyday lives, the Alliance for Sustainability cannot guarantee that you will never receive another piece of junk mail. Please read through the tips for staying off junk mailing lists and always remember, you can call any mail solicitor directly and ask them to remove your name from their mailing lists.
