Death of Jim Green

James Green III of Kansas City died December 5th after fighting cancer for several months. He was 57 years old. Jim served on our NCCS Executive Board and Advisory Board over the past five years. He was deeply involved with Serra International, promoting vocations, and was a Past District Governor. An Eagle Scout, he had served as Scoutmaster, and had headed up his Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting. He had been presented the St. George emblem. He is survived by his wife Marjorie and three children. Please keep Jim and his family in your prayers.

Death of Ben Hauserman

Ben Hauserman passed away on October 9th. He was 88, a past national chairman of NCCS for four years (1975-79). He had served Scouting as a council president, regional board member and national Advisory Council member. He has been presented the St. George, the Silver St. George, the Silver Buffalo, and many other honors. His wife Gen died in December of 1998. They had five children. He had been with us in Richmond in April. Please keep Ben and his family in your prayers.

Death of Emmett Doerr

Emmett Doerr died July 20th at his lake place in Michigan. He was a distinguished member of NCCS for many years, and was honored in 1992 with the NCCS' Brother Barnabas award, the first one ever presented. He made significant contributions to Scouting, NCCS and the ICCS. He received the Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope, and St. George. He also was a great contributor to Catholic education and services. He had suffered a stroke about two years ago that cost him his voice which he regained slightly. He was 90 years old. Please keep Emmett and his family in your prayers.

Fr. Roger Strebel Honored

Congratulations to Fr. Roger Strebel who has been selected to receive the Silver Antelope Award! This is presented for outstanding service to the youth of the Central Region, BSA. The ceremony will take place in Nashville as part of the National Council Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 25th. Fr. Roger is a 50-year veteran of Scouting. He has served the NCCS for many years, notably on the Training Committee. He currently serves as Region 7 Chaplain. He is a pastor in the Green Bay (Wisconsin) Diocese. Our Congratulations to Fr. Roger on this great honor!

NCCS Election Results Announced

Ed Gargiulo has been elected to serve as Chairman-Elect. He automatically becomes National Chairman one year later. Bill Davies was elected Vice-Chairman. Regional election results also available.

Death of Al Fertal

Albert Philip Fertal, Sr. died of a heart attack on November 9th at his home in Riverside California. He served as an NCCS board member, was the National Chairman for Scouter Development, and on the Staff for all six sessions of the National Scouter Development Training School. Please remember Al and his family in your prayers.

Fr. Don Hummel Honored

Fr. Don Hummel was presented the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award at a dinner in New Jersey last week. The event took place on October 21st at the Westwood in Garwood NJ. The award is presented infrequently to persons who attained Eagle Scout as a youth and since then have rendered outstanding service to others. The local Scout council makes the presentation. Congratulations, Fr. Don!

Death of Vito Jokubaitis

Vito Jokubaitis passed away on Thursday, October 7, 1999. His funeral Mass was held on October 12th. He was from Euclid Ohio in the Cleveland Diocese. Vito served as an NCCS board member, and was an Advisor to the International Committee for several years. Please remember Vito and his family in your prayers.

Ellie Starr Announces Retirement Plans

Our NCCS Administrative Secretary, Ellie Starr, announced her plans for retirement in the spring of next year. Her service over twenty years to NCCS is much appreciated and Ellie certainly will be missed.

Tom Deimler to Retire

Tom Deimler, BSA Director of Relationships and a member of the Executive Board of the NCCS, has announced his retirement. Tom has served the BSA for more than 40 years. For the past few years he has served as Director of Relationships in Irving Texas, giving service and direction to church, school, service and community organizations which use the Scouting program. Retirement will be effective November 1, 1999. Best wishes, Tom!

NCCS Advisory Board is Approved

The proposal passed by the NCCS Executive Board at their annual meeting in Baton Rouge in April has been approved by the Diocesan Chairs and Chaplains. This took place by a mail ballot in June. The new Advisory Board will have its first meeting at the NCCS Biennial Conference in Richmond April 28, 2000.
