Death of Michael McGarvey
Michael McGarvey passed away April 26th. Mike served as an NCCS board member, and was an Advisor to the Chaplains Committee several years ago. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at his Long Island NY parish. Mike had just been awarded the Silver Saint George, and it was presented to him "in absentia" in Baton Rouge. Please remember Mike and his family in your prayers. 4/26/99
Death of Carson Buck
NCCS Executive Board member Carson Buck died March 8, 1999. Doctors discovered about four months ago that he had cancer. He lived in Manlius (Syracuse) NY and was a long-time active supporter of Scouting and the NCCS. His wife Martha passed away about two years ago. They had six children. He was 87.
Carson was an Academic Dean at the College of Engineering, Syracuse University. He was a Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Explorer, and earned the Explorer Ranger award. He served on his council's executive board, various Northeast Region committees, and several national BSA committees. He worked several national and world Jamborees, attended six world Scout Movement conferences, and was active with International Scouting. He was a close friend of William "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt. With Catholic Scouting he served as Diocesan Chairman and Area Chairman, then with the NCCS Finance and International Committees. He was presented the Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope and St. George emblem. Your prayers are appreciated. May his soul rest in peace.

Death of Genevieve Hauserman
Genevieve "Gen" Hauserman of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, wife of 1976-1980 NCCS Chairman Ben Hauserman, died on December 26, 1998. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Joan of Arc on January 2, 1999. Gen and Ben were lectors and Eucharistic ministers at St. Joan of Arc where Gen was president of the Women's Guild. Gen had a love of fine cuisine which she attributed to her Italian heritage. She compiled several cookbooks and for several years wrote "Table Talk, " a food column for the Chagrin Valley Times. The NCCS presented her with the St. George emblem for her involvement with Catholic Scouting. Memorials may be made to the NCCS. Please remember Gen, Ben and their family in your thoughts and prayers. 1/4/99
Death of Monsignor Tom Wendland
Fr. Tom Wendland of Houston Texas passed away in his sleep sometime early this morning, December 26th. He had been in Scouting for about 60 years and first became Diocesan Scout Chaplain about 33 years ago. He had been involved with the Catholic Committee many years earlier, and served on the NCCS Executive Board for many years, most recently as Advisor to the Training Committee. He had been honored with the St. George Emblem and the Silver Antelope. Please keep Fr. Tom and his family in your prayers. 12/26/98
New NCCS Finance Committee Chairman and Advisor Named
Bray Barnes has been appointed as the new Chairman of the NCCS Finance Committee, and Monsignor Bob Guglielmone as Advisor. Appointments were announced by National Chairman Bob Oldowski. "Special Thanks" to the past chairman, Jack Deckenbach, and past advisor, Msgr. Joe Carroll, who guided NCCS through many years of financial responsibility. Bray Barnes has most recently headed up the NCCS Resource Development Committee, and is from the Trenton (NJ) Diocese. Msgr. Bob Guglielmone is a Past National Chaplain who has headed up the St. George Treks, and is from the Diocese of Rockville Centre (NY). 11/14/98
Updated Video Now Available
An updated video of "Scouting in the Catholic Church" is being distributed this fall to each of our 175 dioceses and to the Scout professionals. This 13-minute presentation features bishops, priests, adults and youths who speak highly of Scouting as a youth ministry, and shows them in action. 11/14/98
